It is a challenging time at the moment for small businesses, staying a float and ready for the New Year with all the additional expenses that Christmas brought from a business and personal perspective mean everyone is looking for ways to economise.

So, now is the time to take a good look and your business and your processes, perhaps there are areas where you could make changes to assist your cash flow.

So take action now to strengthen your business for the year ahead with our 10 recession busting tips:

Count Every Penny

Take a little time to investigate where every penny you are spending is going. It will be more than worthwhile to spend a little time on this as you will find some money you can save.

Re-evaluate your business; closely examine all the expenses you have, look at the things that have become old habits, those that just happen because they always have.

Check if you can streamline any of your processes, if you can purchase any better, if you can cut-out anything unnecessary.

The real surprise is that most businesses can cut costs without customers even noticing and without it affecting their high levels of customer service.

Show Me The Money

Your customers are vital to your business, without them you have no business, but so is the money. Money is critical to your survival, and a steady flow at that, so it is absolutely vital that you get your invoices out on time and that you get paid for the work /products you have supplied.

Good cash flow is critical for your continued survival in this difficult climate and is what will set you apart from the rest.

Very few of us like to chase our customers for payment, but a little time spent now will reap the rewards in the New Year.

Check & Double Check

In a recession it is essential that you get credit checks on all your customers. It is good practice at any time, but it is even more important in a recession.

If you have not been doing this, it is never too late to start and if you have customers who do repeat business with you, get them checked out as well because things can change in their businesses too.

Also get a credit check on your suppliers, you do not want to spend time and money promoting a product that could disappear or have an intermittent supply line.

Try to take as many of the risks of doing business away, to make your position as strong a possible.

Negotiating or Bartering

Don’t shy away from asking for a better cost price from your suppliers, even if you have been working with them for many years, don’t just assume, you already get the best deal you can, because you may not!

To strengthen your bargaining power try to establish your competitors selling and cost prices if possible, if you cannot get costs at least get the sales price, it will allow you to make some judgements about margin etc ready for your negotiations with your supplier.

Use all your market information to its maximum potential to assist you in reducing your buying price. If you cannot manage to get price reductions across the board on all your products, at least target your most popular selling items and get a reduction on those.

Your Current Financial Status

Always be fully aware of the current financial status of your business and how the next few weeks will impact on it, know the current outgoings and expected income.

Always communicate with your business bank manager. Try to keep in regular contact (this will vary depending on your business and its requirements), keep them informed of your circumstances and if you think you may have difficulties get their help, sooner rather than later.

Always keep to your commitments and do exactly what you say you will do, the bank will look more favourable on you and your situation.

Whatever you do “DO NOT BURY YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND!” This can be fatal.

Your Staff

Use the thoughts and experiences of one of your biggest assets, your staff. Remember they want your business to succeed as much as you do, particularly during a recession.

Ask you staff what they think, what ideas they have, ask for their input. This will make them feel more valued and part of the team and you may be pleasantly surprised about the ideas they come up with.

One or more of them may produce a great idea which may be very successful and make all the difference, if so remember to reward the person. Show your appreciation, get them involved and other great ideas will come in the future.

Be Seen & Get Chosen

It is vital in times of recession that you and your business are very visible to existing clients and potential new customers. In a recession a steady stream of marketing is the lifeblood of your business, this puts you head and shoulders above the competition, be seen and get chosen. Marketing is a vital tool at this time not a luxury, so ensure your profile is out there.

Promote The Good Bits

What is it that sets you apart from your competition, if you do not know what your USP is, then find out quickly and put it in place.

Now you have a USP that sets you apart from the competition, something that your customers like and the reason they choose you. You must now promote your USP like crazy, if some people like ‘it’ then lots more will also like your product or service, but remember you must keep your promises.

Remember Your Regulars

Your existing customers are very, very important, they are the reason you are still in business, so whatever you do to get new ones, do not loose sight of your existing customers and their value to your business.

Do not take them for granted, or assume they will always be there. Everyone is in the same situation and feeling the recession to a greater or lesser degree, so make them feel special and valued. It does not have to be something big or a grand gesture, just the fact you have remembered them in some small way will be enough to reassure them that they are important and valued by you.

Do not let another supplier step in and take one or more of your regular customers away, make them feel valued, provide good products and services, keep your promises and live up to your USP.

Stay Focused

Staying focused and not panicking are vitally important, you now have a list of things you can do to help yourself and your business enjoy a better year ahead.

Work through the list gradually, some things you may already have done or perhaps have been meaning to do, so this is a timely reminder. You may already be following a similar process, well great, whatever position you are in; you are helping yourself to a better 2010.

Wishing you much success, happiness and health for 2010.

Most people don’t realize how much work and thought goes into planning a menu for a new restaurant or refreshing an existing menu. There is so much more to consider than the individual recipes and preparation of the dishes. You also have to think about the type of restaurant you plan to establish and the clientele that you are hoping to attract.

You’ve probably already decided what type of cuisine you would like to offer. Now you must choose whether you want to have a rotating core of specialty dishes or if you want the menu to provide consistency. Varying your menu means you will attract more adventurous diners, while providing quite a few of the same dishes on a consistent basis will keep the same customers coming back for their favorites.

Pricing can be a big factor in the type of clientele that you attract and also on repeat customers. One of the best and most enjoyable ways to make pricing decisions before you open up your restaurant is to do some market research by visiting your competitors. Inspect their menu, sample their food, and see what works for them and you may learn more than you expect. You can examine their prices and see what kind of value or quality the offer customers for the price.

There are a few formulas for pricing menu items that will help you determine what to charge. With the factoring method, one of the more common approaches, you figure out how much the dish costs to make and then triple that figure to allow for wages and other overhead. Or you may want to use the ‘Prime Cost Method’ whereby you add the cost of labor and food and add a percentage to allow for profit. If labor and raw ingredients cost $6 you can add fifty percent for profit and charge $9. Your prices will depend on what type of pricing your level of clientele can comfortably handle. Restaurants that cater to upscale clientele can charge more while family and casual dining establishments must keep their prices geared lower.

You may want to make your grandmothers spaghetti a feature of your menu but this may not be practical? Did she use special ingredients or cook the sauce for hours? These type of considerations must go into the pricing and be considered when determining what dishes you’ll include in your menu.

You need to make the menu both attractive and functional. If you plan to have a dimly lit dining area you should have the print a bit bigger on your menu so people can see what they are ordering. Will you have a special of the day that you’ll need an insert for or a special dessert menu? These considerations can all affect printing costs.

The important thing when planning a menu is to have enough variety to be interesting but not so many choices that the diners are bewildered. Laying it out in sections is very convenient for the customer and has been shown to be a favorite format of most diners.

In the scenario of cutthroat competition you have to “pull up your socks” to keep up the business. Any company has to face the task of courage to thrive in its field to survive. Whether new or experienced company, it spends its resources in promotion to run its business. The greeting card business is also facing similar challenge in the market. Card business has the staggering turnover of dollar seven billion. It is very exiting to start your own business in this field but you should consider few points.

To start your own venture is an adventurous and exciting task. If you are artistic, creative, and have design habits, then this enterprise would be apt for you. If a person were able to express his feelings in a poetic and pleasant manner then the business would be appropriate.

Before starting a business, one should be able to do a research on different industries. It is vital to have an idea of the number of companies working in this field and the major competitors. One should be in touch with the publishers and freelancers who are in this venture.

Recently I was watching the movie Back To The Future. That’s the one with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd where Fox goes back in time and meets his parents when they were in high school. During the course of the movie, his father ends up standing up for himself, which he had never done before, and when Fox returns to the present time, his entire family is in a completely different place.

So it got me thinking. One act completely transforms a life. Now, I realize this is the movies and life isn’t nearly so clear cut, but the truth of the matter is we ARE the results of the choices we make. And our life right now is the end result of the choices we made yesterday. And what our life is tomorrow is the result of what we’re choosing to do today.

What choices are you making right now? Are they choices that are going to propel your life and business forward? Or are they going to keep you stuck in the same place (or worse, moving backwards.)

Many of my clients come to me because they aren’t seeing the results in their business they want to see. They aren’t making the kind of money they want to be making, they don’t have the quality or quantity of customers they want to have. They want their business to be different.

But yet…

They continue to make the same choices they always made, which got them the results they’re seeing right now. And chances are, those choices include choosing NOT to do much marketing.

If you want to be making more money, then there’s no substitution. You have to make marketing a priority.

I wish I could tell you something simpler. That there was a magic pill or a Web site you could go to and sign up and voila — all your problems would be solved. Alas, as is most things in life, that’s not the case.

As a marketing and copywriting strategist, I’m in a unique situation of not only getting to know some of the top entrepreneurs out there but also working with them intimately. And I’ve gotten a glimpse of not only how they’ve structured their successful businesses but what they do to build and maintain that success.

And, for the most part, what I’ve seen is an emphasis on the basics. Including consistently marketing, day in and day out. Nothing sexy, nothing earth shattering. Just an emphasis on marketing on a regular basis, whether they feel like doing it or not.

However, many entrepreneurs don’t really know where to start when it comes to marketing. With that in mind, I’ve decided to begin an article series that will teach those marketing basics, including action steps, so you can immediately start putting them to work into your own business.

But remember, those are the tactics. And while tactics are important, they alone aren’t going to turn your business around. Why? Because if you don’t make the choice to use them and implement them on a regular basis, nothing is going to change in your business.

So, I’d like to encourage all of you to take a few moments over the next few days to take a good, hard look at your choices. Are you making the choices that are going to result in the business you’ve always wanted? Or are you making the choices that are going to keep you stuck or, worse, going backwards?

And, if you’re in the second group, my next challenge for you is to see if you can start making different choices.

Finding the perfect business is not very easy. Some take more money to start than you can come up with and others require a specialized knowledge you simply do not have. Many good ideas already have established businesses you would have trouble competing against. So what can you do? The answer is to find a potentially profitable niche market that is not being served.

Business owners who specialize in serving niche markets have a long history of business success. This comes mainly from the fact it is easier to concentrate on a single, narrow market segment. The big box stores try to be everything to everyone by offering a small selection of, and no service for, many products. By focusing on a single type of product, you can offer your customers many options instead of just a few.

By concentrating on a niche market, you will also be able to offer far better service than your customers are used to. Many niche businesses offer training classes to educate their customers in the use of their products. This training, in turn, creates happier customers, which translates into repeat business and more profits.

Another reason for starting a niche business is that if you are the dominant business in a particular area, you will be the one that consumers think of when they want to purchase what you offer. It will be almost impossible for a small business just starting out to ever dominate in a market against large, well-established players.

If you are serious about starting a successful business, one of the best ways to do so is by finding an underserved niche market and then growing into the dominant provider of products and services for the consumers in it.

When you set up a business, you must pay taxes in order to legalize it. There are various things you need to keep in mind about business taxation. Let us now discuss the tax considerations for a recording studio business.

Register your business

After you set up a recording studio business, you need to visit your local government office in order to register your business. You should also first go through the official website of the internal revenue department (such as the IRS in the USA) in order to learn the amount of taxes you will be have to pay. Remember, the amount of tax will depend on the scale of your business. Registering your business in time will ensure that you will be taxed correctly. The good news is that for the first few months or years when your investments will outweigh your profit, you will get tax credits.

License requirements

You also have to learn if any sort of permit or license is required to run a recording studio business in your locality. If yes, then it will require a further investment. The local government office for small businesses will be able to guide you through this process. This is another important step to legalize your business. A business without proper licensing may not be eligible for tax credits or any other such facilities in the future.

Maintain financial records

One very important step of tax planning is maintaining your financial records in detail. This will include an account of your expenses as well as receipts or payment documents to support the record. Therefore, don’t throw away a single receipt or be careless about writing down a financial transaction, which took place while setting up or running your business. A well-kept financial record goes a long way to ensure you will be taxed correctly and will get the tax benefits for which you are eligible.

File tax returns

You will also need to file your tax returns in time. If possible, you can employ an accountant in order to take care of all these things. However, when your business is quite small, you can do all the tax preparations yourself after researching about it extensively on the Internet.

Paying your taxes is a pain, but it must be done correctly and on time. You really don’t want to risk losing your dream business to the tax man. And tax problems can set you back money-wise for years. Do the proper research and you will be just fine. Ignore your taxes, and Uncle Sam will come knocking.

Want to start a recording studio business and succeed right away? Here’s how to start a recording studio that makes amazing profits by this weekend.

You read that correctly. Anybody can be in the studio business and enjoying life by this weekend. Check out http://recordingstudioprofits.com

If you own a business, chances are you’ve already considered expansion in some respect – whether in terms of product and service offerings, marketing operations, or the number of staff you employ. What’s more, the size of your business has likely had great influence on your ideas of expansion. For instance, small businesses often start with a base set of products or services, limited marketing, and a modest number of staff – ultimately working towards expansion in all of these areas.

There are a number of ways to expand your small business, and countless tools that can help you do it. And interestingly enough, one prominent business expansion tool also happens to be one of the world’s most widely used resources: the Internet. The Internet holds a wealth of information, resources, contacts and more to help you expand your small business in a way that’s right for you.

For example, if you’re looking to expand your business in terms of product or service offerings, you’re likely to need an additional base of suppliers. And what better place to source those suppliers than through the Internet? The Internet can return countless results via a search for specialised suppliers, enabling you to sort through your options and choose the most suitable suppliers based on your business goals.

Alternatively, you might want to expand your small business with regard to product and service promotion – something which can be achieved via online videos, blogs, news articles, or email updates to your clients. The online world happens to be one of the most powerful promotional tools available to business owners, quite simply because it’s so widely used the world over.

However, what if you simply want to increase your number of staff? Once again, the Internet can be one of the most useful resources available for staff recruitment. It’s a fact: countless people search for jobs online, everyday. So if you place job postings online, you’ll get the most exposure – and the highest number of applicants – for your post. The higher the number of applicants, the higher the chances you’ll find the staff you’re looking for.

However, in utilising the Internet for your business expansion operations, it’s worth remembering that certain types of Internet services adhere better to businesses. For instance, you can find specialised business broadband deals which offer higher – and often unlimited – broadband usage, increased speeds, mobile broadband services and more, ultimately giving you better access to the tools you need to help you operate and expand your business.

Therefore, it could prove worthwhile to enquire about business broadband in your area, and discover what this dedicated service can do for your business.

When own your own small business, it’s not always fun and games. There are many things that have to be taken into account. For instance, did you already make sure that you filled out the necessary paperwork in order to file your taxes as a small business owner? Additionally, you have to consider the amount of money that will be needd to start up your company. Make sure you know what items you are able to write off as a business expense, and don’t abuse this. For example, if you want to take your prospective clients out to a nice dinner, that’s one thing. However, if you wind up taking your family out to dinner and pay for it using your business credit card, that’s not always the ethical choice.

Many small business owners will start their business out of their homes. This is both good and bad. It’s bad if you don’t have the discipline to stay focused. After all, there are many natural distractions that one has in their home versus if they were in an office. One mistake that people often make when they are preparing to own a small business is they borrow money against their home. This is a mistake that should never be made. The harsh reality is that not many small businesses end up seeing success; most fail in the attempt. So, what does this then mean for the small business owner who has just taken money out against their house? It’s not a good situation to be in. If you happen to succeed in your business, then consider yourself among the lucky ones.

When it comes to employees and the hiring process, you must first ask yourself whether or not you can afford to hire employees. You may find yourself in a situation in which you are increasing the number of clients that you have. Therefore, you may not have a choice except to hire employees to work for you. If you are working out of your home, this will mean that it’s time to look for an office (unless you are in a business venture that allows all employees to work virtually).

Hiring someone is not always as easy as it looks. You cannot afford to be too trusting (unfortunately) of those who come to interview for the position. It may be helpful to have someone sit in with you on interviews who has prior experience in hiring someone. You can also feel free to read up on how to hire people. This includes knowing how to judge facial expressions, read body language and know what sorts of questions to ask as well. When all is said and done, owning a business can and should be an exciting venture for anyone who is willing to put the time and effort into it that is required. Perhaps the key to being a successful business owner starts with simply being knowledgeable. Know what the current market conditions are. Always plan for worse-case-scenario, this way if times suddenly get rough, you have a plan of action.

Do you have a brand new business sprouting as we speak? Or may be you own a small business trying to find its feet? In either case you need a plan to reach your target customers. And you need it fast.

Just like the big Fortune 500 companies, even the humblest of start-ups need a thorough road-map. What makes it different for start-ups is that they can’t afford a lot of trial and error. You can’t afford to loose a million dollar in market research or focus groups to find out what might work. You have to risk, but do it in a small, one-step-a-time manner. Lets find out what to avoid in your initial marketing and promotional exercises.

1. Acting Small

Greatest sin you can commit in this time and age is to act small. Of course, you are a small business but internet gives you a level playing field with the big guys. So go out, get a neat website, find some multiple-id corporate email ids, get a toll-free no. and open the shutter to public. Dn’t make it blatantly obvious that you are a one-man/woman band. Find ways of being big- not small.

2. Underselling

Yes, you are just starting out. Every penny counts and you have mounting bills. Granted. Undercutting a competitor by underselling can be a business strategy, but simply trying to survive by taking whatever you can- is a SOS signal. Remember, price is an integral part of your marketing mix, please do not dilute it. ‘Better-value’ is a unique proposition’; ‘cheap-product’ is not.

3. Boasting

Do you have references and testimonials to prove your credibility? Is there a way of telling your customers that you know what you are doing? If not, then whatever you say in support of your product and services will sound like an over-hyped speech. So please be careful. Your sales page might be boasting beyond your customer’s logic.

4. Blabbering Online

If you have a business to manage, you have a reputation to guard. Blabbering on online forums, writing sleazy chain-emails, or, commenting rudely on blogs will all show on your Google resume. Watch what you do online.

5. Freeware Mania

Its very common for new small business owners to be always on the lookout for free goodies. Not bad. As long as it cuts the cost and provides added productivity. Beware of too many free links in your website, or, emails. Maybe that presentation that you made with free software that left a ’sample’ watermark, can find its way to your clients.

Hopefully these tips will help you guard against small errors you can make in a bid to quickly promote your business. These are all common-sense pitfalls. Make a habit of avoiding them once will help you throughout your entrepreneurial career.
