Advertising is a necessary part of business. If you must survive, then you need to make the whole public aware of your goods, products and services. That’s the only way you are going to make any money. Whether you are a start up business owner or an established business owner, the different advertising media can serve the purpose for getting the word out. The only glitch to this is the amount of capital involved. If you have a ton of money at your disposal for marketing and promotion, you can decide to hire a PR company or agency and allow then do the ads for you, you could buy up a bill board space, buy time on the TV and on the radio and take out full page, center fold ads in popular and well circulated magazines and newspapers.

But if you are on a budget however, then you just might have to opt for classified ads. These are small ads often placed at the back of newspapers. There are different sizes and boxes. Consult the newspaper you would want to advertise in for this and the various rates. Nowadays, we even have classified ads syndication companies online. With a hundred dollars, you can place make a bulk ad placement order and have your order appear in over 100 publications all over the country for about $1 per ad per newspaper.

Research has however shown that classified ads do not often make any sales neither do they deliver any results unless you know certain things. The truth is you could either waste your money by writing poor ads or trying to sell to people from the ads that are not just enough to spell out what your product or service can do for them.

Instead, here is what you should do: Drive them to the desired location with a strong headline, 2-3 strong benefits or questions and a definite call to action which could be to pick up the phone and call, visit a website or download a free report. You see, if you really want to make any headway with classified advertising, your best bet is to focus on using it as a means of building your list, not selling. The incentive could be a contest, a free gadget or device such as “vote at xyz.com and join the group of lucky people who will win an iPod”, or download a free report offering them relevant info.

Whatever you do, focus on generating leads and building your list. It is really hard to sell people with less than 40 words. But it is possible to get their attention, arouse their curiosity and get them to rush to do whatever you want them to do. Also, avoid using the word “free” in your ads unless you have found a really unique of working it into your ads. That word is so overused, people cringe at the mere mention of it. Use gift or bonus in its stead.
